The Oceans programme currently focuses on ocean spaces through the UK overseas territories, where we are addressing key needs in marine environments and working towards further securing ocean health by utilising industry innovation and science; to support sustainable growth in fisheries and aquaculture industries, facilitate knowledge transfers, support best practices and to connect communities with the marine environment.
Projects under the programme have helped to develop and share knowledge on cutting-edge science; convened community engagement on marine issues; saw the uptake of new technology; and provided guidance on fisheries management. The programme is supporting our global partners to lead the way for coastal communities in effectively managing marine areas and ensure the safeguarding of resources for future generations.
To date, our programme has supported the development of the Commonwealth Blue Charter, an agreement by all 56 Commonwealth countries to actively cooperate to solve ocean-related challenges and meet commitment for sustainable ocean action, driving unprecedented international collaboration to address declining ocean biodiversity.
The programme looks to expand its impact beyond the UKOT’s through our global partnerships and coastal communities engaging in the marine conservation space; with commitments to sustainable fisheries innovation, best practices and access to opportunity.
