On Monday 13th October the Fishmongers’ Company hosted the inaugural National Seafood Conference at Fishmongers’ Hall, bringing together senior industry leaders, government officials, retailers, food service professionals, nutritionists, and innovators to tackle one of the UK seafood sector’s most pressing challenges: increasing national seafood consumption.

Organised by the UK Seafood Federation, which the Company has played a key role in founding and developing out of the Seafood Grimsby and Humber Alliance, the event was held under the theme: “How to Turn the Dial on UK Seafood Consumption.” The conference was delivered in partnership with Seafood Scotland, Seafish Industry Authority, Ocean Fish Limited, and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
The day featured keynote contributions from leading voices in the seafood sector, including Henry Dimbleby, author of the National Food Strategy for England and founder of charity Chefs in Schools, alongside senior representatives from across the supply chain. Discussions focused on seafood’s role in healthier diets, sustainability, and the future of food in the UK.
Dr Eleanor Adamson, Fisheries Programme Manager at the Fishmongers’ Company, shared insights into the transformative impact of the Fish in School Hero programme, which, funded by the Company’s Fisheries Charitable Trust, introduces young people to seafood through education and hands-on experiences. She emphasised how the initiative is inspiring the next generation of seafood lovers and called on the seafood industry to continue and strengthen its support for educational outreach, recognising its vital role in shaping future consumer habits and fostering a deeper appreciation for sustainable seafood.

The conference also saw contributions from several members of the Company including member of the Freedom, Andrew Kenny, who as a certified Master Fishmonger, shared insights as to how the scheme, founded by the Company and managed the UKSF, can work to educate and empower fishmongers across the country to become vital advocates for seafood. The event concluded with a dynamic closing panel discussion chaired by Dan Aherne, CEO of New England Seafood and member of the Livery, who guided reflections on actionable strategies to boost seafood consumption.
Simon Smith, Chairperson of the UK Seafood Federation, stated:
“Our mission is to be the sector’s voice in making seafood a bigger part of the British diet—for a healthier nation and planet. This conference, hosted by the Fishmongers’ Company and supported by all UK seafood stakeholders, marks a pivotal moment for the industry.”
