Mental Health Together for Short Lives

Together for Short Lives

Together for Short Lives is dedicated to ensuring that every child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition receives the care and support they need, whenever and wherever they need it. The organisation works directly with families, provides training and resources to professionals, and campaigns for improvements in funding and service delivery across the children’s palliative care sector. A special grant from Fishmongers supports the Family Hub, a helpline service offering a range of tailored support to families caring for children with life-limiting conditions.

The Helen Bamber Foundation

The Helen Bamber Foundation offer specialist therapeutic care to refugees and asylum seekers who have experienced extreme human cruelty, addressing complex trauma through an integrated model of support. Their work fills a critical gap in statutory services, helping survivors rebuild their lives with dignity and safety. Funding from Fishmongers’ supports the expansion of clinical trauma therapy for survivors of trafficking and torture through Helen Bamber’s new Trauma Centre. Volunteer Mental Health Ascension Trust – Bridge Watch

Ascension Trust – Bridge Watch

Ascension Trust’s Bridge Watch project conducts suicide prevention patrols along the Thames using specially trained volunteers. These volunteers offer compassionate intervention to individuals in crisis, helping to prevent suicides and connect people with further support. Since patrols began in 2024, Bridge Watch has successfully intervened in over a hundred incidents. A grant has been awarded to increase the capacity of patrols across the five City of London bridges, with the aim to provide 24/7 coverage.

The Wren Project

The Wren Project offer free emotional support for people living with autoimmune diseases. By creating a compassionate space to talk, the charity helps individuals navigate the complex emotional challenges that often accompany chronic illness, whilst reducing isolation and improving overall wellbeing.

Room to Heal

Room to Heal is a grassroots therapeutic charity, supporting refugees and people seeking asylum who have survived torture and human rights abuse. FCCT funds group therapy for survivors from across the globe. As the sessions progress, members increasingly understand they are not the only ones to have experienced the horrors that have been inflicted on them. Slowly they build relationships with other group members and start to trust other people again.

Justice & Care

Modern slavery and human trafficking bring misery to the lives of millions internationally, and it is estimated that there are at least 100,000 victims in the UK. The charity Justice & Care supports survivors of modern slavery and works with governments and other NGOs to bring an end to these crimes and bring their perpetrators to account.

InterAct Stroke Support

InterAct Stroke Support is an award-winning charity dedicated to supporting stroke recovery through reading and storytelling. The sessions support patients’ recovery by providing mental stimulation – which can improve memory, language recall and communication faculties – and by improving mood and reducing feelings of isolation and the other symptoms commonly felt by those experiencing post-stroke depression.

Mental Health James’ Place

James’ Place

Men account for over 75% of all deaths by suicide each year in the UK, with suicide being the second largest cause of death in young males. The FCCT is supporting James’ Place to provide men in suicidal crisis with quick and free access to therapy and support.

Thames Skills Academy

Suicide is the leading cause of death on the Thames. Thames Skills Academy facilitates training to give those working on the Thames the skills to intervene if they see someone who looks like they might be contemplating suicide. Participants gain the confidence to initiate and manage a non-judgemental conversation and how to signpost people to the support they need.

Consortium for the Prevention of Suicide

Consortium for the Prevention of Suicide is a network of organisations operating in both the public and private sector dedicated to preventing suicide which was founded by representatives from the security industry. The founders recognised that the security sector needed to take a more concerted, proactive role in suicide prevention, given that security professionals are a higher-risk group working in a higher-risk industry.

Suicide & Co

Research show that those bereaved by suicide may have especially complicated feelings and have extra struggles trying to come to terms with the loss. Suicide & Co supports those bereaved by suicide, opening the conversation around suicide-related grief.

Volunteer Mental Health Central London Samaritans

Central London Samaritans

Prisoners (10x), homeless people (5x) and members of the LGBTQ Community (4x) are all significantly more likely to die by suicide compared to the national average. The FCCT funded Central London Samaritans’ “Listening to London” programme which offers targeted outreach in person support for these and other high-risk groups.

The Listening Place

The Listening Place (TLP) is a London-based charity providing free, face-to-face, non-judgmental support for adults experiencing suicidal thoughts. Volunteers offer 50-minute, fortnightly sessions for individuals to explore difficult feelings, with options for self-referral or professional referral. TLP focuses on providing a safe, confidential environment for those for whom life no longer feels worth living.

The Fishmongers’ Company built the original Ballykelly Primary School in 1828 during the Ulster Plantation and maintains strong ties with school, now a state school. It has funded various projects over the years including most recently Educational interventions and enrichment (music, maths & literacy tuition; cultural trips) to reduce the attainment gap between pupils who are living in poverty and those who are not.

Prisons Resettlement Shannon Trust

Shannon Trust

Prison charity Shannon Trust help over 7,000 prisoners per year to improve their literacy and numeracy skills inside prisons across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Their peer-led education model, where prisoners are trained to support others with their skills, offers flexible learning that can take place inside cells and at individual learner’s own pace. The Fishmongers’ Company grant will support the delivery of Shannon Trust’s education programmes inside prisons, helping prisoners to learn new skills and move into employment.

Ark Resettlement Services

Ark Resettlement Services provides ex-prisoners with accommodation and support at a time when they are most in need of it. On release, many ex-prisoners find themselves homeless, alienated from accessing services and experiencing mental and physical health difficulties. Ark provide housing and individually tailored support programmes to those who are most at risk of reoffending. Working alongside our partnering bodies, they offer safe short-term housing, consistent one-to-one and group support with a specific focus on mental wellbeing, skill development, education and employment opportunities.

Prisons Resettlement ThinkForward

ThinkForward

ThinkForward is a charity that works to empower young people in the UK through long-term coaching. They equip young people with the skills and experience they need to move into work or further education. FCCT funding is supporting a FutureMe programme at Feltham Young Offender Institution, where highly skilled coaches build consistent, trusted relationships with young people through one-to-one coaching and group work sessions, delivering an evidence-based employability blueprint for young offenders.

Switchback

Switchback is an award-winning London-based resettlement charity that supports young men (aged 18–30) to make real, long-lasting changes in their lives after prison. The charity focuses on reducing reoffending rates by providing intensive, one-to-one mentoring that begins in prison and continues through the gate into the community. The FCCT grant is helping fund the first stage in a Switchback trainee’s journey in seven London prisons – one-to-one mentoring as they prepare to leave prison.

Beating Time

Beating Time is an award-winning UK charity (founded 2014) that improves mental health, social inclusion, and employment opportunities for prison inmates. It runs weekly choirs (“Choirs Beating Time”) and peer-led job support (“Inside Job”) to help individuals survive sentences and thrive upon release, aiming to reduce re-offending. The FCCT supports “Inside Job” to build in-prison recruitment networks and support candidates to produce quality CVs and provide coaching for job searching and interview skills.

Prison Radio Association

The Prison Radio Association (PRA) is an award-winning UK charity that uses audio to reduce reoffending and improve rehabilitation. It operates National Prison Radio, the world’s first 24/7 radio station for prisoners, reaching up to 80,000 people in England and Wales, plus the Life After Prison podcast for those preparing for release. FCCT funding supports men at HMP Brixton to develop technical skills, improve their mental health, learn about radio production and presenting, and start paving pathways into meaningful employment and education.

Hackney School of Food

Hackney School of Food is a not-for-profit food education hub in East London. They work with schools and local community to deliver cooking and food growing programmes that build life skills and shape a healthier, more resilient future. With the help of FCCT funding, it provides a free weekly after-school club for children from low-income backgrounds and/or with poor dietary health. Over three years, they hope to reach 225 children.

The Garden Museum is Britain’s only museum dedicated to the art, history and design of gardens. Housed inside the historic former church of St Mary-at-Lambeth, next door to Lambeth Palace, the museum is home to a collection of art and objects from garden history, telling the stories of great gardeners and exploring how and why we garden.

Volunteer Food Nutrition Providence Row

Providence Row

Providence Row helps around 1,500 people affected by homelessness each year, providing practical support, including nutritious meals and washing facilities, as well as advice and services to help people to address their situation, including a substance misuse programme and access to psychological support. The FCCT is funding its “Yes Chef” Catering Programme which helps participants from vulnerable backgrounds to gain employability skills.

Bow Foodbank

Bow Foodbank is a Tower Hamlets-based charity providing emergency food and toiletries to residents in financial crisis. Operating for over 10 years, it offers non-referral, accessible support, including up to 12 visits per year. Locations in Bow and Bethnal Green provide food via "come and see us" sessions and click-and-collect services.

FoodCycle

FoodCycle is a UK charity (founded 2009) that reduces food waste and poverty by transforming surplus food into free, weekly three-course vegetarian meals for local communities. Supported by over 10,000 volunteers, it aims to tackle loneliness, improve mental health, and promote sustainability through community dining in over 48 projects across England and Wales.

Food Nutrition Beyond Food Foundation

Beyond Food Foundation

Beyond Food Foundation uses food as a tool for social change. The charity, which has previously received support from the Fishmongers’ Company, is the recipient of a new three-year grant in principle for its work with care-experienced young people. The Beyond Care programme will see the charity collaborate with residential homes to run catering skills training for the young people in their care. The programme will also include sessions on developing life and employability skills. Participants will be able to access work experience placements, as well as support and advice around securing further training or employment.

New Model Schools

The Fishmongers’ Company is a Patron of the New Model School which runs two private but not-for-profit prep schools in London, Maple Walk in North-West London and Faraday on Trinity Buoy Wharf in Tower Hamlets. Their aim is to provide excellent, affordable prep education. The Fishmongers’ Company’s Charitable Trust fully funds up to four concurrent places at Faraday. Education Arts St Paul's Cathedral Chorister Trust

St Paul's Cathedral Chorister Trust

The St Paul’s Cathedral Chorister Trust was established in 1984 to provide financial resources to support the education and musical training of our Choristers. Grants made by the Trust have given many children the unique experience of being a member of the choir of St Paul’s. The Chapter of St Paul’s currently provides very generous scholarships which cover the full cost of the Choristers’ education and music tuition. This support for Choristers is supplemented by grants from the Chorister Trust to provide means-tested bursaries towards the cost of boarding fees.

UCL Medical School

The Company has a long-standing commitment to supporting education and widening access, and one of the impactful ways it does this is through bursaries for medical students at UCL Medical School. Central to this support are the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson bursaries, named in honour of Britain’s first female doctor and champion of women in medicine. These awards are funded from a dedicated trust and aim to provide financial assistance to medical students facing hardship, helping them manage the significant costs associated with training to become a doctor.

Prisons Resettlement The Longford Trust

The Longford Trust

The Longford Trust is about second chances for those like Lee (above) who have been in prison. Our Longford Scholarship programme has, since it started in 2005, supported close to 600 young people, most of them in their 20s, to rebuild their lives through education after serving a prison sentence. 85% go to university, graduate and move forward thanks to our Employability project to have careers, to settle down, and to start families. In short, they do all the “normal” things that most take for granted. We work with them to make that happen.

Brent Centre for Young People

Over the past 50 years, the Brent Centre for Young People has developed unique talking therapies, most notably Adolescent Exploratory Therapy (AET), a form of psychodynamic talking therapy that recognises the unique developmental phase of adolescence and the psychological challenges associated with this stage in a young person’s life. Additionally, the Brent Centre has developed specialised Group Therapy for Young Offenders, and Sport & Thought, which uses football as a setting for group talking therapy.
