Over 8 million adults (14.8% of households) in the UK experienced food insecurity in January 2024 (Food Foundation). In London, 25% of households face food poverty, with one in four children unable to access nutritious food.
City Harvest, a long-standing charitable partner of the Fishmongers’ Company, works to collect surplus and waste food from across the capital and redistribute it to community kitchens and centres who prepare 1.25 million meals a month for those suffering food poverty.
The Livery Food Initiative (LFI), a pan-Livery Company project supported by Fishmongers, helped raise enough money for City Harvest to purchase in 2023 and run for three years a refrigerated Sprinter van that will deliver 500,000 meals over this period.
The LFI is now raising additional funding to purchase and run for three years a 7.5 tonne refrigerated truck which can collect food from further afield, whilst also increasing the programme’s capacity. It will rescue 3.5 million meals over three years and save over 700 tonnes of greenhouse gases – positive outcomes for both people and the planet.
