Below are some of the most recent grants awarded by our Philanthropy & Grants committee spanning our three target areas, providing critical services within London and beyond:
Justice & Care – Mental Health
Modern slavery and human trafficking bring misery to the lives of millions internationally, and it is estimated that there are at least 100,000 victims in the UK. The charity Justice & Care supports survivors of modern slavery and works with governments and other NGOs to bring an end to these crimes and bring their perpetrators to account.
A grant from the Fishmongers’ Company’s Charitable Trust will support Justice & Care’s Navigators programme in London. Navigators are specialist caseworkers embedded within police forces who provide trauma-informed support to survivors of slavery and trafficking, improving their mental wellbeing and giving access to further specialist mental health support.
InterAct Stroke Support – Mental Health
InterAct Stroke Support is an award-winning charity dedicated to supporting stroke recovery through reading and storytelling.
A new grant from the Fishmongers’ Company’s Charitable Trust is supporting the charity’s one-to-one reading sessions across five London hospitals. Professional actors read to stroke patients, tailoring the material and conversation to the interests and comprehension levels of each patient.
The sessions support patients’ recovery by providing mental stimulation – which can improve memory, language recall and communication faculties – and by improving mood and reducing feelings of isolation and the other symptoms commonly felt by those experiencing post-stroke depression.
Claremont Project – Mental Health
A grant from the Fishmongers’ Company’s Charitable Trust is supporting the Claremont Project in Islington. The charity’s arts and wellbeing centre offers a range of classes, group activities and events designed to bring together local older residents, many of whom are living on low incomes. The grant will also support Claremont’s low-cost psychotherapy service for local residents.
Providence Row – Food & Nutrition
Providence Row has supported homeless people in east London since the late nineteenth century. Today, it helps around 1,500 people affected by homeless in Tower Hamlets, the City of London and Hackney each year, providing practical support, including nutritious meals and washing facilities, as well as advice and services to help people to address their situation, including a substance misuse programme and access to psychological support.
A grant from the Fishmongers’ Company’s Charitable Trust will help to fund the charity’s 10-week catering training course. The course enables people with few training opportunities available to them to experience working in a professional catering environment and to gain a food hygiene qualification. Providence Row’s Employability and Progression coaches will work with the course participants to identify further work experience and employment opportunities.
Beyond Food Foundation – Food & Nutrition
Beyond Food Foundation uses food as a tool for social change. The charity, which has previously received support from the Fishmongers’ Company, is the recipient of a new three-year grant in principle for its work with care-experienced young people. The Beyond Care programme will see the charity collaborate with residential homes to run catering skills training for the young people in their care. The programme will also include sessions on developing life and employability skills. Participants will be able to access work experience placements, as well as support and advice around securing further training or employment.
